Finest TV Selections: 7 Essential Films In the Days Ahead

Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's bold commentary tackles the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore delivers a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to presenting a workout series on TV. Edged out due to her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and gruesome process titled the Substance. This produces a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery includes Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take some time off from covering world issues to board a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, plus additional affluent individuals. However when an enigmatic female disappears from the ship overnight and all passengers claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries with this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the CIA to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. After Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a basement, he fears a fatal end. However, the old telephone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his spouse. The two stars are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
