In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, without initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Key developments leading up to this strike involve:

- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
