Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
